Who we are
BARVAZ started in 2024 as an informal meeting group of Jewish students coming together to find community and solidarity during a time of conflict and hatred in the Netherlands. Since then, we have grown into a diverse and independent grassroots community. In 2026, we decided to turn BARVAZ into an official organisation to serve the Jewish youth community of Utrecht.

Do I need to be Jewish to join?
BARVAZ is for anyone who has a tangible connection to Judaism - whether it be through religious identity, family, beliefs, having a Jewish partner, cultural heritage, or lived experience.
Do I need to be religious or observant?
No. We are inclusive to all levels of observance, and walks of life. We ask that everyone is respectful and tolerant of each other's choices and values.
Can non-Jewish partners, friends, or allies join BARVAZ events?
Yes, you are encouraged to bring friends along who are interested in supporting our community.
Do I need to be a student?
Not necessarily. BARVAZ is an umbrella organisation for Jewish people aged 18 - 35.
Is BARVAZ affiliated with a specific religious or political movement?
No. We are an independent organisation and receive funding from various non-partisan sources. We may have working relationships with other Jewish or public institutions that allign with our inclusive values.
I'm new to Utrecht / don't know anyone. Will I fit in?
Many members are new and are keen on making new friends. You will find your people here!

Our Accomplishments
Bringing young Jewish life back to Utrecht
Since 2024 we have organised over 50 social and cultural events in Utrecht.
Representing Jewish voices at University and Municipal Institutions
On several occasions we have raised discussions about safety, inclusivity and antisemitism with Utrecht University and gemeente Utrecht, giving our community a place to advocate for their needs and concerns.
Engaging in Tikkun Olam and Holocaust memorial programmes in Utrecht
We have organised and attended memorial services and taken initiative in organising volunteers to help the local Jewish community centre.
Creating a safe and pluralistic space
Barvaz allows for people with diverse political and religious backgrounds to come together in a safe and friendly environment.

Growing an engaged community
We're focused on members who stay involved — through newcomer support, buddy systems, and real opportunities to take initiative — not just growing numbers.
A consistent rhythm of Jewish life
Rather than occasional big events, we want members to know there's always something coming: social nights, Shabbat and holiday celebrations, and space for member-led ideas.
Greater visibility across Utrecht
We want BARVAZ recognised as the home of Jewish student life in Utrecht, with a stronger presence at local universities and in the wider community.
A welcoming space for everyone
No prior knowledge, existing friendships, or level of religious observance is needed to belong — just a connection to Jewish or Israeli identity and a willingness to be part of the community.
Sustainable funding, built to last
We're establishing diverse, reliable funding — grants, partnerships, sponsors, and membership contributions — so future boards don't have to start from zero.
